Expelled from his grammar school in 1971, the author desperately sought an escape from the direction that life was taking him. The threat of working hard in an Israeli kibbutz without pay for the next year didn't appeal, but an advertisement in a Sunday newspaper did. The British Shipping Federation was offering opportunities to make a career in the Merchant Navy.
Experiencing life aboard all types of merchant ship, including a spell on Queen Elizabeth Two, there was always adventure on hand. This account is a chronological description of those experiences, compiled from contemporary records, letters, documents and photographs.
The author's career culminated in an audacious quest to venture behind the Iron Curtain in an attempt to marry a Soviet citizen. An unlikely, and ill-advised, relationship had developed during visits to the U.S.S.R.

A good read, could relate to a lot of the stories, would thoroughly recommend it !!
A wonderful story of the early life and experience of a young boy to manhood at sea. Very well documented and remembered.
The experiences gave the writer an excellent grounding of life
for later working life and has a particular connection with
past Russian life and times at times of peace. This book is definitely one to keep for prosperity as I know I will want to read it again in the future. I hope the author will produce another book
as a sequel.
I found this book to be wonderfully readable and difficult to put down. Grammatically, it flows so very well and I was engrossed by the adventures of such a relatively young man in the big wide world. What Nick achieved in a few years is a testament to his determination and strength of character. I felt privileged to have read this book.
Excellent book. Well written, accurate in detail, full of interest and a really enjoyable read.

I have just finished reading this hugely enjoyable book.Nick (who I know from ‘another life’ ) has a thoroughly engaging writing style and I often felt he was talking directly to me. He describes a world I am utterly unfamiliar with and does so with panache and great humour. He has certainly lived a varied and challenging life so far and I am glad he put pen to paper and allowed us to be part of the adventure. Highly recommended and I look forward to the sequel which there surely must be.
